Dental implants – today's solution to missing or failing teeth

How do dental implants work?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made from pure titanium that heals permanently in the bone; a unique process known as osseointegration.

Is dental implant treatment expensive?

The treatment is a highly cost-effective investment over the lifetime of the implant. It can permanently improve the patient’s dental function, appearance and confidence.

How much do dental implants cost?

Every case is different. The dentist normally provides the patient with a costed treatment plan in advance.

What happens to the patient after the implant treatment has been completed?

The patient is normally returned to their usual dentist for routine care. But, regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are essential for the long-term health of dental implants.

What kinds of defects can be treated with dental implants?

  • Replacing missing teeth
  • Supporting single crowns and fixed bridges
  • Retaining full dentures
  • Replacing full and partial dentures

How long do dental implants last?

With consistent dental hygiene, dental implants can last a lifetime.

How long does the treatment take?

The procedure is completed entirely by day surgery. Straightforward treatments can be completed in one visit, but more complex cases can take longer.

Is a general anaesthetic necessary?

No. The procedure can normally be completed under local anaesthetic.

When is bone grafting necessary?

Bone which previously supported teeth that are missing is resorbed when it is not in continuous use. If the underlying bone is weakened or too thin, dental implants cannot be placed without bone grafting. Grafting can be used to improve the strength of the supporting bone in advance of implant placement in order to achieve the desired functional and aesthetic result.

What aftercare do dental implants require?

Implant borne teeth can be cleaned like natural teeth, with a toothbrush – including an electrical toothbrush – and toothpastes. The patient should continue to make regular check-up appointments with their dentist and hygienist.
