Factors in the success of dental implant treatment
Successful dental implant treatment
There are a number of factors that can contribute to the success of your implant treatment. These include:
- Your oral health
- The clinical skill of your implant dentist and implant team
- The design of your implant
Your oral health
Good oral hygiene is essential for the long-term maintenance of dental implants. Dental implant placement has moved on in leaps and bounds in the last few years, and patients who previously may have been considered outside of the scope, can now be treated. You may not be suitable for dental implants if you have an active infection, while heavy smoking and uncontrolled diabetes are believed to increase the risk of implant failure.
The clinical skill of your implant dentist
Whilst dental implantology is considered part of general practice dentistry in the UK, the Training Standards in Implant Dentistry body states that; “it is essential that the dentist carrying out this work has received suitable training, and has been assessed as competent to do it. This will normally involve…taking a postgraduate training course in implant dentistry.”
You should always check whether or not your dentist is qualified and has the experience to carry out dental implant treatment.
The design of your implant
Implant success depends heavily on implant design, particularly how it fuses with bone and tissue. You should expect your dentist or implantologist to be well informed through scientific research and studies on the most appropriate, safe and proven equipment and materials... Ensuring your implant designs provide the final look and life-long stability you require should be a key factor in your decision making.
